Which current drivers do you consider most vital to the skin-care market and which opportunities do arise with them? How do these developments affect the skin care market? How important is it for manufacturers to respond to these trends and how does BASF support its customers in meeting consumers’ demands? The following short news from BASF Personal Care gives answers to these questions.

1.)  Which current drivers do you consider most vital to the skin-care market and which opportunities do arise with them?

The skin-care market is currently driven by a variety of social aspects. Demographic change, for instance, is one of the key drivers that is boosting demand for anti-aging products, but also individualization, the emergence of multi-cultural societies and the economic crisis have led to wide-ranging needs and the creation of some very specific product categories. The growing awareness of health, safety and sustainability among consumers strongly shapes their demands and has caused a trend for natural products and solutions.

2.)  How do these developments affect the skin care market?

Consumers’ desire to stand out as individuals has brought about greater segmentation of the skin-care market, with products that can be adapted to specific needs and targeted to different ages or life-stages. The desire for beautiful and healthy-looking skin has triggered an intense drive promoting sculpting products with lipo-filling or lipo-reducing action for the face and body. As consumers are increasingly looking for products with claims such as “soothing”, “mild” or “suitable for sensitive skin”, the number of such products has grown steadily in the last five years. Skin-brightening treatments and perfecting serums have also been particularly successful in recent years, and BB creams are following suit. A growing awareness of the need for everyday UV protection has led to a significant increase in the application of UV filters, even in cosmetics that are used on a daily basis. The body-care segment is still dominated by the well-being trend. Here, we see a particular focus on pleasurable textures which provide, for instance, a cocooning sensation. And also slimming and anti-cellulite solutions continue to be successful, in the form of multi-functional products inspired by aesthetic procedures.

3.) How important is it for manufacturers to respond to these trends and how does BASF support its customers in meeting consumers’ demands?
